Thomas Mapfumo, known as the Lion of Zimbabwe, has devoted his life to fighting injustice and corruption. His criticism of Robert Mugabe’s regime earned Mapfumo exile, so he now lives in the United States. Remarkably, Mapfumo’s music, known as chimurenga (the Shona word for struggle), is banned in Zimbabwe. With a dominant message of freedom and justice backed intermittently by mbira, guitar, organs, bass, vocal choirs and brass, Rise Up remains a mastery of righteous conflict by the indomitable Zimbabwean and his band, the Blacks Unlimited.
