Soapstone is found in massive deposits around Kisii Town in western Kenya, and the mining and carving of decor accessories and sculpture from the stone provides income for many Gusii people. 

Most African cultures embrace elephants as wise beings worthy of respect and honor, but as the open spaces elephant herds once roamed give way to urban developments, elephant are being seen increasingly as nuisances and crop raiders. Our abstract elephant sculpture recalls an age when elephants occupied a more graceful symbiosis with human beings.
