Kenyan Cow Bone Butter Spreader

Country of Origin
Kenya
While products created from cow bones may not be for everyone, this unique butter spreader reveals a thriving Kenyan tendency to utilize all parts of a butchered cow. Cow bone has been used by Africans through the centuries as a crafting material, and Kenyans especially love to use it as inlay and to create useful utensils for export.

The handle of our bone butter spreader is hand dyed using a wax batik method. The white portion of the design is "painted on" with molten wax, then the piece is dipped repeatedly in dye. Once the desired color depth is attained, the wax is chipped away, leaving the striking high-contrast pattern.
