Soapstone Zebra Sculpture

Gusii artisans in rural western Kenya hand carve this sweet plains zebra sculpture from soft soapstone, a metamorphic stone similar to talc. Since most Kenyan soapstone is mined in the Kisii District, the stone is known specifically as "kisii stone". Carving useful items from kisii stone brings supplemental income to several families in the district.
